Blog topic preview for this week

First of all, thank you for your questions for Raine. Judging from all the emails I got, I think everyone's enjoying hearing the characters of MLTF reveal more about themselves -- and dish the dirt about other characters. ; )

The Character-of-the-Week for this week is Mychael Eiliesor. Now's your chance to see if you can get him to tell you what goes on behind that cool and proper paladin exterior. Send me your questions throughout this week, and Mychael will be answering them on Saturday.

Since I was busting my tail this weekend on a project I hope to be able to tell you about soon, today is "blog lite." But one of this week's topics will be the query letter I wrote for MLTF in an attempt to get the attention of superagent Kristin Nelson. She liked my letter, requested a partial of the manuscript, then the complete manuscript, then she offered representation. Yea!!!! If you go to Kristin's blog (see the link to "Agent Kristin" in the list to the right), she goes through a couple of her clients' query letters part-by-part, commenting what it was about the letter that got her attention. My letter for MLTF (then called Thief of Souls) is one of them. Just scroll down in her blog until you reach "Agent Kristin's Queries: The Inside Scoop." (It's on the links list on the right.)

I'm going to so something similar with my query letter, except I'll pick it apart from my point of view -- why I wrote what I wrote in an attempt to get Kristin to want to see more of MLTF.

Tomorrow night from 7-8 at the Barnes & Noble in Cary, NC, I'll be having my FIRST EVER booksigning & reading. Public speaking -- yikes! Seriously, I'm looking forward to it. I'll be doing the signing with James Maxey, author of Bitterwood (a fantasy adventure of the epic battle between humans and dragons). I'm reading it now, and it's awesome (and the cover simply rocks). Pop over to Amazon and check it out. I'll be sure to let you guys know how the signing went (and how nervous I was), and post pics for your enjoyment -- or amusement. ; )

Try to have yourselves a great Monday!
Lisa

The query letter dissection certainly sounds interesting--it'll be fun to see it from both sides.

So . . . ever plan to come to California for a book signing?

Kristin's dissection has been up on her blog for months, so you can pop over and read that today, if you'd like. I'll post my take on my query letter tomorrow.

Hmmmmm, North Carolina to California. Perhaps when I'm on the NY Times bestseller list and my publisher sends me on a national book tour. ; )
Hey, a girl can dream.

Actually, it was the query letter on Kristin's blog that first got me interested in MLTF. Then one day I saw it at Borders, remembered the letter, and went, "Ooh, I want that!"

So I suppose query letters don't only hook agents. ;)

I've had a LOT of people first learn about me and MTLF from Kristin's site. Yet another great thing about having Kristin for an agent -- she's got one of the most popular agent blogs in the industry.

NYT Bestseller + national book tour = NC to NJ ; )

I'd read Kristin's comments on your query on her blog before, but I also enjoyed reading the comments from your angle. Good insights. Thanks.

Oooh, Mychael's on the hot seat this week. I'll have to think on some juicy questions for him.

Questions, questions, and more questions....

1. Background--where born, raised, how much time on Mermeia, relatives, why become a Conclave Guardian/boyhood dreams and aspirations.
2. Run-ins in the past with members of the Benares family? (and what -do- they do with all that money they've been secreting away, anyhow?)
3. Past history if any with Raine's father or those he was in contact with or rumors thereof?
4. What is the relationship between the Paladin of the Conclave Guardians and the Saghred, anyway, given that it had been hidden away by Raine's father for most of a millennium...?
5. What were the favors/assistance exchanged between Tam and Mychael?
6. What sort of pranks did Mychael engage when in schooling on Mid? (reference--look up pranks at e.g. MIT and Caltech, which range from the likes of Freshman Shower Night to highly elaborate schemes of inflatable balloons emerging from other universities' football fields, arranging for signage at the Rose Bowl to spell out Caltech instead of the intended wordings, turning MIT's Great Dome into a giant jack o'lantern, extreme dorm room and administration offices and classroom "redecorating" extening to moving around bolted-down furnishings and installing brick and mortar enhancements...)
7. What sort of involvements has he and and how inconveniently has Raine arrived in his life (or was there some foretelling about her...)?
8. What was his side of Raine-suddenly=materializes-as-a-sending-in-the-bedroom-he's-sleeping-with-the-clothing-on-him-consisting-of-the-bedding scene, what were his reactions and his feelings about a fully clad Raine and an unclad Mychael (and had that sort of thing been wont to happen to him before, for various other reasons?

And yet another question:

That telepathy, communicating with Raine, how normal is it for Mychael, that is can he do that with anyone, does he regularly do that with anyone, how accustomed are people of his acquaintanceship to it?

And that bring up more questions, another one, about his cousin and his cousin's new wife, I take it the wedding wasn't in Mermeia? Where was it, who got invited, way Mychael there, how do their feel about Mychael and Raine assuming their identified for that big social events... and do Mychael and his cousin communicate without having to speak, for that matter, is that telepathy something only Mychael has in his family, or does his cousin and whatever other relatives he has, also have it? How common a talent or ability it is?

WOW! Now that's what I call a list of questions. Mychael's gonna be a busy boy answering those.

Wow. I'll just second all of those with an emphasis on 5...

Yes, how did Tam and Mychael get to know each other and what was involved? They seemed like old friends. At first, anyway.

And 8...

Interesting set up, especially considering his first rather rude and painful introduction to Ms. Benares. He must be a very forgiving sort. Not even a mention of her...uh, disabling tactics when they met again. ;)

I like #5 and 8, too. I'll be real interested to hear what Mychael has to say.
