Query letters -- How to write pitch paragraphs
I want to give a heads up to the writers out there. My agent Kristin Nelson has a blog that's become one of the places in the publishing industry to go for information on how agents work, what works for them, and what doesn't. This week's she's just come home from the Surrey International Writers' Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This past weekend, she taught an eQuery workshop on how to write a pitch paragraph for query emails or letters. Most writers Dread (with a capital D) writing query letters, mostly because they feel they have to sum up their entire plot in a single paragraph. Not the case. Kristin's doing a mini-seminar on her blog that started last night (Tuesday) and will run through the end of the week. Her website is www.nelsonagency.com, but you can click on the "Agent Kristin" link in the list to the right and it'll take you straight to her blog. I can guarantee you it'll be advice worth its weight in gold. If you a writer getting ready to start submitting your work, you should check it out.
Update on The Trouble With Demons: Okay, so I found a slight snag in Chapter 5 (of course I did). Then I found the solution, or actually the solution slithered onto the bed next to Raine. Sarad Nukpana. Yep, Sarad Nukpana is in TTWD. Yeah, yeah, I know, he's trapped inside the Saghred at the end of MLTF. But Sarad Nukpana isn't about to let a little thing like being a disembodied soul get in the way of vengeance. ; ) He has turned into the most delicious villain. And as you writers out there know, if you get a villain that good, you hang on to him.

That blog from your agent sounds interesting- I`ll have to check it out! As for the tidbit from The Trouble Wtih Demons, I personally think that keeping Sarad Nukpana in the plot will crate even more mischief and mayhem for poor Raine to deal with. And we all know that mischief and mayhem are key elements in any story that's worth reading, right? :) I can't wait to hear more!
My love for Sarad Nukpana is second only to my love for Phaelan. Glad to hear he hasn't fallen into a depression. :)
Nope, Nukpana definitely isn't depressed. Devious, deceptive, and at times downright dirty, but definitely not depressed. ; ) I think Sarad Nukpana is going to become the villain everyone loves to hate. He's magnificent in Armed & Magical. You all will love the scene where Sarad Nukpana "manifests" while Raine is in the bathtub. Great stuff. ; )
Hmm. There are Tam, Mychael, and Sarad Nukpana all vying to be a mate of Raine's (recalling the passage in MLTF where Nukpana was trying to persuade Raine to go ahead and attack him with the stone's power and revel in using it, and be his partner in powermongering....)
FYI, the direct link to Kristin's blog is

Hee. Yeah, I frequent her blog every day (and it was so nice to see the acknowledgment to her when I was considering buying MLTF).
Sarad Nukpana is definitely a villain everyone loves to hate. Slimy and devious, but fascinating. (Reminds me of House in a weird, non-magical way. ;-))
Hmmm, Sarad Nukpana similar to House. I love it! Actually, in the scene I'm writing I could see Hugh Laurie easily delivering Nukpana's lines. Well, I know who I'm going to be thinking about as I finish this chapter. ; ) Thanks for the insight, Nancy!
Does Raine's father reappear? While he's been in the rock for a year, he's a lot old than Nukpana, and has a proprietary interest....
Raine's dad (Eamaliel Anguis) plays a huge role in The Trouble With Demons as well as Bewitched & Betrayed.

Combining that with Nukpana being on-scene, reminds me of a humorous cartoon strip that Mike Gilbert, the late husband of Sheila Gilbert of DAW Books, had drawn long ago, in which Hare Krishna sect members and members of another religious group, got into a difference of opinion and then into a large cloudy-mass-of-people fight.... (the points of contact being Nukpana -is- a cleric of a pushy sect out trying to recruit Raine, and Raine's father is NOT someone who I would expect to be happy at attempts to recruit his daughter into that sect....)
