Too much stuff for one book
What I said yesterday about weaving in subplots made me realize that once again I have too much stuff to fit into one book. It happened with Magic Lost, Trouble Found. For those of you who haven't read them yet, on the "Interviews" page on my site are chapters and scenes from MLTF that didn't make it into the book due to space considerations. Read and enjoy! And Armed & Magical has a whole book's worth of discarded material. I ditched 80% of the first draft content and started over. (Let me tell you, that was a lot of fun. Not.) There was nothing wrong with what I wrote, it just didn't fit with the story I needed to tell.
My books tend to "split" -- what I thought was one book ends up being two. Raine's world is becoming so vast that I just can't include everything, as much as I want to. I have to take one slice per book. I'm not complaining -- it's a wonderful problem to have. I will definitely never run out of material.
Now for The Trouble With Demons, I just have to weed out the extra stuff in my plot to get at the core story. I can always save the extra stuff for the next book. ; )

I just wanted to say that I finished reading "Magic Lost, Trouble Found" all of an hour ago and, well, WOW! What a refreshing, fun, fabulous fantasy story! I've been literally aching for a great story that was entertaining, a great laugh ( I love comedy) with some fun characters and awesome action...and this totally delivered. I seriously loved the way you mixed sarcasm, disbelief and running for your life in such a great way -- I like to think people don't always turn into panicking, mooing cows when everything goes nutty :)I could start waxing poetic about what I loved about each character, but that might take forever, so I leave it with the fact that I can't wait until the next book ( arrghh!! April!!!!) and to see what madness our favorite seeker and friends manage to get into. Keep up the great work!
Hi "T"
I'm glad you enjoyed MLTF so much! I don't go for themes or deep philosophical meaning in my books -- just fun, laughs and characters you can like and care about. If I've done that, I've done my job. ; ) If you haven't already found them, I've posted the first two chapters of Armed & Magical on my site, and on the Interviews page are outtakes from MLTF. Also on that page are "interviews" with some of my main characters. Enjoy!
Lisa: Ha, I see that you have acquired another devoted follower!! T, I heartly agree with you, I too could wax poetic about every single character! :) I know, April seems such a looong time away!
Heh, thanks for the warm welcome Kate! And the excerpt from Armed & Magical made me laugh so hard -- Vegard and Justinius are such a hoot. I can't wait!
Lisa, I also took the time to check out the rest of the page and I think it's so, so awesome that you fence! I have friends who fence with the SCA and I did Japanese fencing for while until I injured my ankle (my doc ranted about no more kendo for a long while). It's definitely something I want to get back into!
And maybe I should sign with my name instead of an initial... :)

Hi Trishana, I absolutely adore Vegard and Justinius, too. Heck, I love all of my characters -- even Sarad Nukpana. And yes, he's going to be around for a long time. When you get a villain that good, you don't kill him off. I'll just add more villains to keep him company -- and keep Raine on her toes. ; )
Kate and Trishana, any time either one of you want to wax poetic about my characters, feel free! ; )
