Chat and contest at The Book Smugglers!

Recently I chatted with Thea and Ana over at The Book Smugglers, and the ladies turned a chat into a chat and a contest! (This is such a fun book review site; I've put it on my list to blogs to visit every morning.) I'll be popping in over there throughout the weekend, and will try to answer any questions you might have -- unless it would result in a spoiler. ; )

There are two sets of prizes (they're listed over at The Book Smugglers), but if you're a winner, don't be surprised to find a few extras in your prize pack when you get it in the mail. ; ) Just pop over to The Book Smugglers, enjoy the chat, and leave a comment at the end of the post to enter the contest. It's that simple. The contest will be open until Monday, July 14 at MIDNIGHT (Pacific Standard Time, GMT -8). Thea and Ana will randomly select and announce the winners Monday afternoon. Good luck and have a fabulous weekend!

On Monday: I'll finish my post on doing book signings with dealing with your nerves, choosing a passage from your book to read, having fun with the audience Q&A, and good bookstore CRM/manager/event coordinator etiquette. What can I say? I'm a Southern girl; I've been taught to write thank you notes and bring a hostess gift. The CRM has invited you into their store for the evening, therefore they're a host/hostess. ; )

Next week: I'll continue the "what I didn't know until I got published" series with promotion, where to get really cheap/free promo materials, tax write-offs, dangers of burnout, Amazon rankings (ignore them), gifts for your publishing "team", advertising, and more.

Unsure where I read it (think it was on the interview....) but you said that because you're working on your next book you're avoiding reading fantasy right now. Do you do this every time you write? Or just when you're at the ideas stage? Was just wondering why, that's all (still haven't read MLTF yet...its on my bookshelf, waiting for me to finish my stack of library books). Then I'll buy the 2nd, and keep waiting for the next one! Yuna

Great question! When I finish a book, it's been an intense 8 months of writing and polishing to meet my deadline. Truth is, I need a break. Since I've worked so hard during that time, I desperately want (and need) to read, but I also want to give my brain a break with something else besides fantasy. Usually during this time I try to find new authors, or catch up on my reading with favorite non-fantasy authors' books that I haven't had time to enjoy. Once my brain's had a chance to rest, I'll catch up on the fantasy reading that's been piling up. ; )

I hope you enjoy MLTF! : )

Ahhh! That makes a lot of sense. Initially, i quit reading fantasy while I was writing my work. But then, thanks to those on CC, I got back into reading, discovered why I'd read constantly a few years ago. And discovered that I wasn't finding my ideas in other books, or that I was influenced by them. Reading helps me to come up with different ideas, to learn what works in a book, what doesn't. And just to get away from it all.

I'll let you know what I think! When is the 3rd one due to come out? Yuna.

It's exactly the same with me -- reading helps me come up with new and fresh ideas. And it gives my tired writing-saturated brain a chance to unwind and rest. ; )
