Authors are people, too

I was reading Pat Rothfuss' blog this morning and came on his reference to John Scalzi's recent post -- don't ya just love cross-blogging? ; ) John's post was on 10 Things to Remember about Authors. He starts out with: "Because it appears someone needs to say these things out loud, some thoughts, for the consideration of readers, about authors, particularly novelists. Warning: This is long."

Yep, it's long, but worth the read. It's funny, insightful, and as far as I can tell dead-on accurate. That being said, ANY reference John makes to rude, inconsiderate, or snarky "fans" (notice I put "fans" in quotes). That means that these people may think they're fans, but they're not. If they were true fans of an author, they would be supportive, encouraging, fun to talk to, understanding, and simply some of the best people on the planet. That would be you guys -- my fans. I couldn't ask, beg, or pray for better people to support me and my work. I have never received even one snarky email.

Ya'll simply rock!

But John penned a great post, and he's right -- authors are people too. ; )

BTW -- I had a permanent filling put on my root canal tooth yesterday. No novacaine. Yeah, that kinda surprised me too. But I guess when you've had a root canal, there's nothing left in that tooth for a drill to hurt. A most interesting experience. And I was gratified to know that my left fang came through it all perfectly and will be staying with me. Yea!

P.S.: Don't forget that every Saturday between now and April 28 (with The Trouble with Demons comes out) will be Snippet Saturday -- I'll be posting short snippets from TTWD for your reading enjoyment. And by Monday, I'll announce the contest to win ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) of TTWD. Stay tuned.

Thanks Lisa! For everything :)

It's always frustrated me when fans, or "fans", I suppose get mad at an author for taking too long or doing something different. If a favorite author, who usually writes fantasy writes a romance book, and you don't like romance, you don't have to read the book. You also don't have to complain. Just read the next book that the author writes that appeals to you...

One of my favorite authors is Shannon Hale. She writes very different stories from you, but she has some really great blog posts. I think you should look at it when you get a chance. Some of them are funny, and some of th really good ones are farther back, so just poke around when you have a chance. I thought that you might like to look at her most recent blog post (at least as of when I'm writing this...) on different types of authors. Or different levels of success. anyway, you don't have to look at it, but her website/blog is www.squeetus.com

If one of the saturday snippets could have Tam and Raine, it would be great... and Phaelan and Piaras... gosh, it could have anybody and I'd be happy, but Raine and Tam would be nice...

Thanks again for the ARC contest

good luck adjusting to a new time :)

have a good day :)

I'm glad the root canal succeeded. {SMILE} A permanent filling sounds good, too. {SMILE}

I'm not entirely surprised by the lack of novocaine. A successful root canal kills the tooth, but leaves it where it's useful. So it shouldn't bother you now. {SMILE}

Those posts do make me think about both fans and writers. Interesting. {SMILE}

I checked out Shannon's blog for today, and it was great! Thanks for the recommend.

You got it -- I'll do a Raine & Tam snippet for Saturday.

Hi Yolanda! Good for you (taking time for real life). As soon as I get Bewitched & Betrayed off to my editor, I'm going to be taking a short break myself -- a very well deserved break. ; )

Thanks for the link to the article Lisa. I am certainly sharing it on the forums I frequent. Sometimes people do need reminding about those facts.
