Fun book quiz

Today is a fun book quiz from Jo in London. She's asked for my answers, but I want to hear some of yours. Respond to the blog and share your answers with all of us.

1. One book that changed your life? Actually it was three -- Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy. The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment. After reading these books, I knew I wanted to be an author.

2. One book you have read more than once? Jim Butcher's Dead Beat.

3. One book you would want on a desert island? Jim Butcher's Dead Beat. ; )

4. One book that made you laugh? The early Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich.

5. One book that made you cry? I can't recall one. Probably because I don't read books that would make me cry.

6. One book you are currently reading? Jennifer Estep has asked me to write a blurb for the first book in her new series: Spider's Bite, the first in her Elemental Assassin series. I'm loving it!

7. One book you've been meaning to read? Oooo, entirely too many. I think the saying "Too many books, too little time" definitely applies to me. Though slowly but surely, I'm working my way through my TBR stack. Probably one of the next books I'll read is Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol. I haven't read a thriller in a while and I really enjoyed The DaVinci Code. I love me a fast-paced adventure.

4. One book that made you laugh?

Short story was only writing that actually made me cry & it was The Last Rung on the Ladder by Stephen King. I still get emotional when I recall it.

1. Anne McCaffrey's Acorna series. It introduced me to the issue of human trafficking, a cause which I intend to help if I succeed in being published.

2. Many books! Most recent, which I bought so I wouldn't have to keep borrowing it from the library, Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

3. The Little White Horse, by Elizabeth Goudge. I've got my mother's copy, and I love it to pieces. The film wasn't bad (changed a lot!!!) but the book is timeless.

4. Many books, most recently Missing, Believed Crazy by Terence Blacker

5. Most do, at some point. Even Raine's story! I tear up at happy events, as well as sad.

6. Currently reading Shadow Gate by Kate Elliott.

7. Like everyone - heaps! Illona Andrews Magic series. It's still on my shelf...

1. Book that changed my life: The Silver Hand by Stephen Lawhead. I first read it when my grandfather was in the hospital. Lawhead had all sorts of awful things happen to his characters, but all through there was this sense of hope, and of God's grace. The end had me cheering. That's when I decided the best thing an author could do was remind people to hope.

2: Just one? There are so many books I've read more than once. Umm... Changeling Prince by Vivian Vande Velde.

3: Book I'd want on a deserted island. That's too tough for me. I'd want my whole library.

4: Book that made me laugh: Most of Terry Pratchett's Night Watch series. Also the Nero Wolf mysteries. (I know. You said one.)

5: One book that made you cry: Finally, an easy question! Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. I bawled at the ending. Then I read it out loud to my little brother, and bawled again.

6: One book I'm currently reading: I'm supposed to be reading The Count of Monte Cresto. I'll get back to it one of these days, honest!

7: One book you've been meaning to read: The Kalevala, just as soon as I track it down.

1.) Book that changed my life: The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. I read it in junior high, and sometimes I felt like that book was my only friend. I read it seventeen times in one year.

2.) Book I've read more than once: Well, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, of course, but another would be Rider's First Call by Kristen Britain. It's my favorite of her three Green Rider books.

3.) Book I'd want on a desert island: It would have to be a big one...I think I'd take my book of Scottish fairytales. Lots of variety, even though the stories are short. If I'm going to be on that island for any length of time, I'll want some variety.

4.) Book that made me laugh: Why, any of your books, of course! That's what I love about them.

5.) Book that made me cry: I've read a few of them, but the most recent one was Voyager by Diana Gabaldon.

6.) Book I am currently reading: Another Diana Gabaldon; The Fiery Cross

7.) Book I've been meaning to read: The list goes on and on, but the one that's been on the to-read list the longest would be The Sword of Shannara. It's one of the classics of fantasy, the one fantasy book that almost everyone has read. As widely read in the genre as I am, and I still haven't read this one. Oh, the shame!

Superwench, if you haven't read Terry Brooks before you might want to start with something other than Sword of Shannara, or else bear in mind that it's the first book he wrote. It's good, but it starts really slow.

1. One book that changed your life?
uh, good question. Maybe 'Experiment Hex' by Rhiannon Lassiter. It was the first book I ever bought, because I wanted to read it very badly, and my library didn't have it. That was the start of my ever-growing private library...

2. One book you have read more than once?
I've read most books more than once.'Magic strikes' by Ilona Andrews, to name one of them.

3. One book you would want on a desert island?
'How to leave a desert island as fast as possible (map to the nearest bookshop included)' by Unknown. Because: No laptop + no (new) books + no chocolate = No sanity.
4. One book that made you laugh?
'Alcatraz versus the evil Librarians' by Brandon Sanderson, and others...
5. One book that made you cry?
I can only recall one, but there were probably a lot more. 'Harry Potter and the half-blood prince'
6. One book you are currently reading?
'Maskerade' by Terry Pratchett
7. One book you've been meaning to read?
'Angels Pawn' by Nalini Singh. I tried to get the eBook, but my bookshop is having serious problems with them. So I have to wait until they sort it out...

I am SUPER excited that you list the Merlin trilogy as the books that "changed your life." They are some of my absolute favourites of all time! I would list them in my answers but since you already have them listed I'll use some of my other favourites! :)

1. One book that changed your life? Just one book? Hmmm... Well, one is definitely Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. This is epic fantasy at its very best. When I read it I remember everything I love about the genre and why I wanted to write in the first place. Of course, a smaller, less magical and cynical part of me keeps saying that I will never write anything as good.

2. One book you have read more than once? Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey. I love absolutely every one of her books but I've probably read this one at least once a year since the first time I read it... Which was probably about six years ago only... but STILL!

3. One book you would want on a deserted island? The Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay. Technically this is three books (The Summer Tree, The Wandering Fire and The Darkest Road) but I have the big pretty one that contains all of them together!

4. One book that made you laugh? Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Even when something I read is funny I rarely actually laugh out loud. I definitely did with this one.

5. One book that made you cry? Um... no book at all? I have been very involved with characters and felt very sad when the author killed them off... But I don't think I've ever actually shed a tear over one.

6. One book you are currently reading? I've just recently been starting to branch out from the fantasy/sci-fi genre to other areas. Right now I'm gobbling up tons of mysteries and I just discovered Elizabeth Peters! She is a phenomenal author. So right now I'm on the third of her Vicky Bliss series: Silhouette in Scarlet.

7. One book you have been meaning to read? Um... I actually have a 50+ list on goodreads.com and that doesn't include the ones I just have tallied in my head for future reading... I guess one series is the Boudica series by Manda Scott.

Yayyy quiz time!

1. One book that changed your life?
That would have to be The Dark Lord Of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones. Great book - changed how I thought fantasy should be written.
2. One book that you have read more than once? Most of my books would fit in this category, but I'll choose Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones
3. One book you would want on a desert island? Oh no - complete overload. But I'd choose Terry Pratchett's "Nation", because that is about being shipwrecked on a island (if not a desert one)
4. One book that made you laugh?
Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett.
5. One book that made you cry? Um. Can't answer this one. Probably because I hate depressing books and am determined to erase from my memory any that I have read.
6. One book you are currently reading? Moon Called, by Patricia Briggs.
7. One book you've been meaning to read? Bitterwood by James Maxey and Chalice by Robin McKinley.

Ooh, I missed this yesterday. I'll do it anyway, because I love this kind of thing. (And Lucy, it sounds like we have very similar reading tastes--Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett are two of my favorite authors!)

1. One book that changed your life?
That's a hard one. I'll have to say Megan Whalen Turner's The Thief. It's one of my favorite books, and it's the one that really made me think hard about character and try to dissect in a writerly way why Gen is such an appealing character.

2. One book you have read more than once?
I'm a re-reader, but I'll go with Watership Down by Richard Adams. I first read it as a kid and I bet I've reread it a few dozen times over the years.

3. One book you would want on a desert island?
Ooh, how to choose just one? I guess I'd want Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. The writing is so beautiful I can read it over and over.

4. One book that made you laugh?
Anything by Terry Pratchett or Diana Wynne Jones. But for "can't breathe I'm laughing so hard" I go with Neither Here Nor There by Bill Bryson, an account of his travels across Europe. It's hysterical.

5. One book that made you cry?
I cry easily at books (and movies). I was tearing up last night reading Kelly McCullough's Cybermancy, for Pete's sake. The last book I remember truly sobbing over was Melusine by Sarah Monette.

6. One book you are currently reading?
The next book on my "to be read" pile is the first book in a YA series called Vampirates. I couldn't resist the idea of pirates that are also vampires!

7. One book you've been meaning to read.
I've been meaning to pick up Patrick O'Brien's Master and Commander books for ages, but I never have gotten around to it.

Fun quiz, thanks!

Okay, a bit late but...

1. I don't know about it changing my life but...Comeback by Dick Francis. My mum picked it up as a discount book for me because it had a racehorse on the cover and that was my obsession at the time. Now, Dick Francis is one of my favourite authors.

2. Gosh, I reread as much as or more than I read new books(which is a lot). So, out of the many, A Thousand Words For Stranger by Julie E. Czerneda. I even have more than one copy of it. Heh!

3. Oh boy, this question is killing me. Maybe His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik.

4. The most recent one is Beat The Reaper by Josh Bazell. I just couldn't stop laughing out loud.

5. I don't often read books that make me cry but the latest one is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.

6. Nothing right this second. I JUST finished Thicker Than Water by Mike Carey. OH...MY...GOSH...I need the next book NOW...but it's not out in North America yet!!

7. Ha! Just one off the super duper long list?? The Lindisfarne Gospels: Society, Spirituality and the Scribe by Michelle P. Brown. Illuminated Latin manuscripts are so cool :)

Ooh, I want in!

1. One book that changed your life? "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. I was completely captivated by this anti-feminist dystopian universe she created. It was ingenius, and the book blew my mind. I read it in one night when I was seventeen.

2. One book you have read more than once? "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" by Elizabeth George Speare. I've read this book more times than I can count -- I read it for the first time when I was 7 or 8 years old, and I STILL read it. I hold a special place in my heart for that colonial, puritanical era of American history in all it's witch-hunting glory. I don't really know why.

3. One book you would want on a desert island? Maybe something by Chris Wooding, like "The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray" or "The Fade"... reading his books is like watching movies. I don't know that I've ever seen any other books as clearly in my mind as I do his.

4. One book that made you laugh?
"Dying Bites" by DD Barant. Her protagonist is quick-witted and sarcastic, and her barbs just kept cracking me up.

5. One book that made you cry? Well, most recently (read: yesterday) I welled up during a part of Richelle Mead's "Thorn Queen"... it was a particularly vivid glimpse into something particiularly horrific that her character was being forced to endure.

6. One book you are currently reading? I finished "Thorn Queen" yesterday, and am just now cracking open Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol." I'm excited!

7. One book you've been meaning to read? "The Secret Life of Bees" and "The Glass Castle" are probably at the top of the list. I also have a LONG list of books I want to read because I've read and enjoyed other books by those same authors

1. One book that changed your life? Well, I don't know if it changed my life, but The Kestrel by Lloyd Alexander certainly changed my writing. It shaped my view of war in general. It also shaped my approach to madness when I'm writing or role-playing. {Smile}

2. One book you have read more than once? More than I haven't. {smile} But if I'm to name just one, A Wrinkle in Time got re-read in high school, despite my conviction that I was "too old for kids books." {Smile}

3. One book you would want on a desert island? A blank note book. A really big one. Even better, a whole stack of them. {Smile} Don't worry; they wouldn't stay blank. I have quite a few folk-tales pretty much memorized. Writing them down would take at least a week. But I could also use them for original tales, which I have no shortage of at all. {Smile}

4. One book that made you laugh? Plenty... but I can't name a single one. I laugh easily, when reading or doing anything else, but trying to remember why later is a lost cause.

5. One book that made you cry? I'm not sure I've ever cried because of something I read. I often get so upset I can't sleep well that night, but I don't remember that invlovling tears. {small smile} No, I can't remember which books upset me that much, either. I think I'd rather not. {lop-sided smile}

6. One book you are currently reading? I'm currently reading Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis, Beyond the Rain by Jess Granger, The Grand Tour by a couple of authors I don't care to look up at the moment. No, it's not Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer. I have that one too, but this one is a tour of major and other notable planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other celetial bodies in the solar system. {Smile}

7. One book you've been meaning to read? Melting Stones by Tamora Pierce is one no one's mentioned yet that I don't have to get up to check the title, author, or spelling of either. {Smile}

Sorry I'm late, I'm in Denmark, and hvelittle access to the internet.

1. One book that changed your life? Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings when I was around 11/12 - before this book, I wasn't a "reader"; I had read some books, but I weren't really into it. After, well, I havent stopped reading yet!

2. One book you have read more than once? Too many! The Belgariad, Mallorean, Elenium and Tamuli series by Eddings, have all been read more than once, among others.

3. One book you would want on a desert island? Probably one I haven't read before - but I would end up finishing it too quickly :/

4. One book that made you laugh? I've just finished Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway, that had me laughing quite a bit.

5. One book that made you cry? A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, among others.

6. One book you are currently reading? Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead. It's pretty good!

7. One book you've been meaning to read? Ugh, loads! I am currently making my way through my TBR pile :)

Thanks for answering the qustions, Lisa!
