While you're writing: To read or not to read?

First of all, an update. I'm on Chapter 1 of Con & Conjure and it's going wonderfully. I've never had a book start this easily. I'm actually having fun. I feel like I'm back to why I started writing in the first place -- to play, to create. I guess after four books, I finally feel secure enough to relax and enjoy the process. That being said, I'm sure this book is going to give me fits eventually; but for now, I'm just gonna go with the flow and have fun.

Okay, now to today's blog topic: To read or not to read while writing. Virtually any author interviewed in any magazine, newspaper, or blog says that the two most important things aspiring authors can do is write every day and read voraciously.

The writing part takes discipline and then some, but the reading comes naturally, eagerly even. If you're a writer, it goes without saying that you love to read, probably from a young age. But when you're writing your own original work for publication, do you read while writing?

In recent years, there's been quite a few highly publicized cases of big name and/or big dollar authors plagarizing the works of others. Each case that appears in the news asks the same question: Did they do it accidently or on purpose? Writers are sponges, we soak up the world around us, ponder it, and some of that comes out in our prose. And while we read, we absorb.

John Grisham once said in an interview that he doesn't read a lot when he's writing. "We all want to read good books, and so you read a good book by a really good writer and I catch myself inadvertently imitating him or her. And so you think, 'Well, I wouldn't use that word, I wouldn't do that sentence that way.' I read a lot when I'm not writing."

By necessity, that's what I do -- I read a lot when I'm not writing (which is a couple of precious weeks a year). During that time, I'm voracious. The simple truth is that I don't have time to read while I'm in the trenches of writing a book. My spare time is nearly zero. But at the same time, as a writer I feel like I'm starving myself if I'm writing and not reading; my creative well isn't being replenished. So what do I do? Grab those few precious minutes a day and read.

However, I'm vigiliant that while reading I'm feeding my creativity, not soaking up the words of others to put on my own page. But if your characters, plot, and voice are strong enough and embeded deeply enough, you won't be influenced by the work of others, but instead you will be inspired and refreshed. That's how it is with me. That's why I try to read while I'm writing, to keep my creative well of inspiration from running dry.

What are your thoughts? To read or not to read?

Have a great Monday!
Lisa

Hi Lisa :)
Thanks for sharing such a poignant post. I read when I am writing too, just not the genre I am writing. I am currently writing an UF so I am reading YA.
:)
Thanks again for sharing,

Wow, this post gives me a lot to think about. I'm still in the learning stages of writing. I never considered NOT reading. Never occured to me that I might accidentally be plagarizing someone else's work. Something to think about...

Well, it might not be that you'd steal another author's character, plot, or something like that. It's more that you'd shift from your own writing style into another author's style. It's important in fiction to have your own voice and to make your own choices. Reading other fiction authors might influence you into making their choices: first person instead of third, say, or more elaborate language over direct. That's the worry we all have.

When I'm writing, I'm only thinking about my story. It doesn't matter what genre I'm reading. Once I have that blank computer screen in front of my face, everything else is out of my head.

That intense focus of concentration can be troublesome. My husband knows now that he needs to call my name to get my attention when I'm absorbed in something. Otherwise, I have to ask him to repeat himself.

I can also plug right back in when the interruption is over. Having a child helped hone that skill. :)

I've noticed that if I read while I;'m writing, I tend to mimic voice and things like verb tense (e.g. if I'm writing in past tense and read a present tense book, I'll start shifting to present tense). I'm so busy that I don't often have time to read while writing, but sometimes I have to since I also teach literature. And reading picture books while writing one can be immensely helpful because of the abbreviated length. So I guess it just depends.

Greta post, Lisa!

Hey there. I know, posting a little bit late but I figured I'll toss my two cents in anyways.
New fan here as well as a hope to be writer and I just wanted to say that whenever my muse is on a roll for a creative idea, yet my fingers just won't type, I read. Heck, that's how I found your books and I LOVE them!

I'd say read though. It sets up a new angle, gives time to untie some bumps and knots that might be clogging the creative juices. As for picking up on other ideas you might have just read from a book, I don't know how often that really happens to someone. I'd say to read is more of an inspiration, a jolt if you will, to suddenly want to make a bee-line back to the keyboard and type your own ideas again. Like I said before, it’s just seeing a new angle, a breather.

Good luck and have fun in your next book! I saw in your most recent blog post that you’re writing the next book already and I cannot wait to see both that and the fourth book.

Hi Sarah! I'm so glad you love my books. In December, I'll be posting the first three chapters of Bewitched & Betrayed as a Christmas present for my fans -- be sure to stop by and get your present. ; )

I have to read while writing, too. There's nothing like stepping into someone else's world for a while to give your own creativity time to simmer.
