NaNo -- The Finish Line is in sight!

A quick Saturday update. Uh. . . it is Saturday, right? (checks computer clock/date). Yep, it's Saturday. 7:50 AM, I've been up since 6:30. That's early for most people, normal for me. Yep, I'm one of those early risers regardless of the day.

NaNo update -- I have approx. 3600 words to go to reach the 50,000 NaNo goal. I figure I'll do 1800 today and 1800 tomorrow. That will give me time to do it in a sane and orderly fashion -- and also have time to dust the house, clean the toilets, and get the Christmas decoration boxes back upstairs. I took some time out after meeting my word goal of yesterday with decorating the Christmas tree. I decorated it while watching a documentary on extreme caving (I couldn't find the Christmas music channel -- danged complicated TV remote!) Derek says it's easy; you just push this, then this, then these two buttons together, which takes you to this menu . . . Oh yeah, easy.

Anyhoo, once I make word count each day this weekend and knock off my chores (Derek gets to vacuum and get the leaves out of the gutters), I can READ. Glorious, lovely, READING. Words that someone else wrote.

For those of you who are close to making your NaNo goal -- write like the wind, people. You can do it! For those of you who know you're not quite gonna get there -- I'm so proud of you for making the effort and continuing to make the effort! I'm also so proud of those of you who had a hellacious November, life got in the way, and you had to stop NaNo. You didn't want to stop, but life gave you no choice, but you're determined to keep going even though NaNo will be over on Monday. You're a writing machine and nothing will stand in your way of finishing this project.

Kudos to every last one of you!! Writing books ain't easy. The process never goes as well as you think it will. You'll always hit snags that screw up your schedule and your word goals. But the difference between people who talk about being a writer, and people who become a writer is persistence, determination, and discipline. If you've got those three, you're most of the way there.

From the time I decided I wanted to become a published author to the time I actually signed my first book contract was 20 years. I kept at it, and I made it. And if I can do it, you can, too.

At the moment my word count stands at 44,555. I didn't have that until just a few hours ago. And before the sad, sad number I was just over 40k. So I am happy to say i wrote the most yesterday than I did any other day during Nano, probably more than the whole year! I went from feeling like there was no way I could make it to knowing that I could. Sure, I am still slightly behind but nowhere near as bad as I was. I can do this!

Lisa- I bet you will get through this last bit quite quickly. Oh, and I took your advice and skipped to another scene. And you know what? That was how I caught up! So thank you for inspiring me not to give up!

Yea, Tori!!

After I finish the chapter I'm working on today, I might have to skip to another chapter, too. There's no rule that says a book has to written from beginning to end. ; )

See you across the finish line!

Yup, it was exciting. Then I remembered I'll have just as much work ahead of me today. So now I am a little bummed, but mostly excited that I am SO CLOSE to the finish line.

That is true! It's just not something I have ever tried to do before, but honestly...I want to try it more often now. It sure keeps writer's block away. And before Nano that was something I experienced a bit. Not now.

I can't wait! We both earned it!

This does sound promising. Best of luck! {SMILE}

And don't be afraid to take a little break after you hit 50,000, even if you're only half-way thru the story. Another friend is in a similar situation: he's got a story about twice as long as NaNo. He's still taking a few days break after 50,000. He figures he's earned it. {SMILE}

So, it turns out I'm actually a muppet; here was me congratulating you for getting past 30k, being SURE that was the NaNo total, and then finding out from a volunteer at my Oxfam Bookshop who is also taking part that the total is actually 50k. I am sure it said 30k! Pfft. So I'm sorry for congratulating you too early.

But yaaay! Almost at 50k! That's so cool! Almost half a story down! I'm with Anne; half a story in a month is more than enough reason to take a little break. Read, read, read! :)

Thank you Jo and Anne! I will actually be taking a break from writing Con & Conjure and getting some reading done -- to proof the copy edits to Bewitched & Betrayed. ; ) My editor said I should be getting these around 11/30 which is Monday.

I'm within 300 words of my goal (also in a novel which will probably end up being around 100k)--don't know if I'll finish tonight or tomorrow, but at least I'll get there! Congrats to you too.

I'll be forced to take a break (or at least work slower) after this, since I make jewelry and run a cooperative artists' shop--so December is not a great month to focus on writing. But at least I'll have a big chunk done, so I should be able to putter a bit in December, then hopefully finish in January when things get quiet.
BTW-the word verification I got was perist...an awful lot like "persist" :-)
